Thomas Aquinas (1225\u20131274) was an Italian Dominican friar, theologian, and philosopher considered one of the most significant thinkers of the Middle Ages. His body of work formed the foundation for all later Catholic theology and had a profound influence on the history of philosophy more broadly.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Life and Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thomas was born into a noble family at Roccasecca Castle near Naples. Against his family’s wishes, he joined the Dominican Order of Preachers, which led to conflict with his family. He studied in Paris and Cologne, among other places, where his teacher was Albertus Magnus, who recognized the young Thomas’s exceptional talent.<\/p>\n

Aristotle and Scholasticism<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thomas’s central achievement was uniting Aristotelian philosophy with Christian theology. Ancient philosophy had reached the medieval West largely through Arab and Jewish thinkers such as Averroes and Maimonides. Thomas saw that reason and faith were not mutually exclusive but complementary: reason can reach truths through the natural world, while faith opens access to revealed truths that lie beyond the limits of reason.<\/p>\n

Major Works<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thomas’s best-known work is the Summa Theologiae<\/em>, a vast and systematic exposition of Christian doctrine addressing, among other things, the existence of God, ethics, and natural law. He formulated the famous “five ways” (quinque viae<\/em>) for proving God’s existence through reason, including arguments from motion and causation.<\/p>\n

Legacy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thomism, the philosophical and theological school based on Thomas’s thought, exerted a powerful influence on Catholic doctrine for centuries, and in the 19th century Pope Leo XIII elevated it to the status of the Church’s official philosophy. Thomas’s theory of natural law continues to influence legal philosophy and ethics today. He was canonized in 1323 and is known in the Catholic tradition as a Doctor of the Church, whose thought united ancient philosophy and Christian theology in a unique way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
